We live in a thriving (albeit unfriendly) city, the city of brotherly love. Philadelphia is a rambling jumble of pristinely kept historic architecture, not so pristinely kept other forms of architecture, parks, horrible roads, and pockets of tightly knit communities and cultures. Part of the territory of such a melting pot is the outrageous variety and caliber of food. Really, the food scene is top notch. There are so many kinds of restaurants and so many doing their genre well that several of the most popular local spots gained their loyalty by focusing on the simplest and most perfected offerings.
Federal Donuts is one such example. Now present in 3 central locations as well as a small shop in the Phillies stadium, they have but two items: chicken and donuts. The chicken comes as wings, and half-or-whole-chickens (think fried chunks of breast meat). The chicken comes in a variety of glazes or rubs, the flavors of which vary at each restaurant location. Similarly, there are two varieties in the style of donuts that you can order: fancy or hot. Fancy are prepared in advance and heavily glazed with exotic flavors, while the "hot" donuts are made to order and dipped in your choice of blended seasoning. Flavors include Vanilla Lavender, Apollonia (think Orange Blossom and Clove mixed together), Indian Cinnamon, or our favorite.. Strawberry Vanilla. It's a strangely perfect combination, and the donuts stay delicious for a few days (stock up when you go, they close early!).
Cheers mates
