A customer and friend recently reached out to us with a good old fashioned question: when do you use leather balm? His concern arose from the fact that he, as most leather-conscious men, uses shoe polish. Does shoe polish doe the trick, or is there another benefit to leather balm that should not be overlooked? Our response:
"Great to hear from you bud.. personally, I use Alden tan shoe polish on most of my dress shoes/boots (you can buy this direct from Alden’s website, JCrew carries it, and high end cobblers/shoe repair shops should carry it). I find that they have the most balanced color and it really draws out the earthy tones of good leather over time.
I do, in fact, use my own boot balm too though. Balm, like mink oil, is for really thirst leather, weather beaten leather, and leather that is about to go through the wringer. Polish doesn’t penetrate as deeply as the beeswax and oil based balm, and will build up over time as opposed to the way that leather balm soaks in and restores the leather’s natural oils.
